Best POS for Small Bars: What to Look For (2026)

By the HospitalityStack editors · written from hotel & resort F&B experience

What a small bar actually needs

A busy bar lives or dies on tab speed. You need to open a tab with a card pre-authorization, ring modifiers fast, split checks without drama, and close out at 2 a.m. without fighting the terminal. Fancy table maps and multi-course coursing matter less than reliable card processing and a layout your bartenders can hit with one hand.

Hotel and pool outlets have a different checklist — see choosing a POS for hotel outlets. This guide is for standalone and neighborhood bars.

Features checklist

Preauthorize bar tabs so a walkout does not become a loss. Confirm it is in the plan you are buying, not only in a demo.

Quick-key layouts and modifiers for doubles, mixers, garnishes and well vs. call that price correctly.

Happy-hour / time-based pricing so you are not editing every drink twice a day.

Split checks and tip handling that bartenders can finish in a few taps.

Offline mode: ask what happens to card payments if Wi-Fi drops, and for how long.

Inventory hooks so pour data can flow into a count tool (see bar inventory software).

Handheld or phone POS if you have a patio, beer garden or roaming service.

Square: published plans, bar tabs on Plus and up

Square for Restaurants publishes three plans per location: Free $0/mo, Plus $49/mo and Premium $149/mo. In-person card fees are 2.6% + 15¢, 2.5% + 15¢ and 2.4% + 15¢. Preauthorize bar tabs and split/reopen checks are not in Free; they appear on Plus and Premium. Plus and Premium include a 30-day free trial and can be cancelled or switched anytime. Hardware starts from published options (readers from $59). Businesses processing over $250,000/year can ask for custom rates (checked Oct 2026).

Lightspeed Restaurant: $69–$399, pre-auth on every listed plan

Lightspeed Restaurant lists Starter $69, Essential $189 and Premium $399 USD/month, plus a custom Enterprise tier. Pre-auth bar mode appears in all three published plans. KDS is $30 per screen per month on Starter (and listed on Premium). Prices may vary by business type (checked Oct 2026).

SpotOn: $0 All-In or $55 Essentials per station

SpotOn publishes restaurant POS plans starting at $0/station (All-In: higher card-present rate of 2.79% + $0.20, processing minimums, 2-year minimum term) or POS Essentials at $55/station with card-present 2.45% + $0.15 (Amex higher) and month-to-month flexibility. Hardware is SpotOn-only; Station 15 is listed around $750 on sale from $995, handhelds around $297 from $495, plus implementation. 24/7 support is included (checked Oct 2026).

GoTab and Toast

GoTab is tab- and QR-heavy (breweries, food halls, entertainment). It publishes software tiers of Basic $15/mo, Pro $99/mo and Sync $229/mo, plus transaction-based processing, and can run on Android, iOS or Windows tablets (checked Oct 2026).

Toast does not publish a fixed monthly plan grid. Upfront costs are hardware and implementation (vary by package); Pay-as-You-Go inside Starter reduces upfront via an all-in-one platform rate. Toast runs only on Toast-approved hardware and includes 24/7 support. Treat Toast as quote-only (checked Oct 2026).

Pricing questions to ask every vendor

Is processing bundled, and what is the contracted rate at my volume? Monthly software fee per terminal or per location? Hardware bought, leased or financed — and the early-termination cost? Contract length? What exactly is included for tabs, offline and inventory? Get answers in writing. For a side-by-side of Square vs Toast vs Lightspeed fees alone, see small-bar POS pricing compared.

Which fits a small bar

One terminal, simple menu, tight margins: Square Free or Plus is the only option here with a published all-in price and card fee you can model before a sales call — Plus is the cheapest Square plan with bar tabs. Want published bar-mode on every plan and deeper restaurant tooling: get Lightspeed quotes at your volume. Prefer $0 software with SpotOn hardware and a longer term: All-In; want month-to-month: Essentials. Tab-first patio or beer garden: shortlist GoTab. Larger menus or multi-station kitchens: get written Toast (and Lightspeed) quotes and compare total monthly cost at your real card volume.
